Heidi Lorenz Wettach (she/they) is one of the main sound engineers at Elsewhere and Knockdown Center in Brooklyn, originally from New Jersey. In this interview, Heidi talks about their experience learning how to engineer through the Jersey DIY punk/noise scenes, which they were an active member of. Heidi discusses the transition from New Jersey to New York as one of searching for work and community, and finding both through sound engineering. Heidi talks at length about working at Elsewhere—their first engineering job with a mostly queer production crew—and considers how and why the industry’s demographics are shifting away from its (grumpy, old, white, male) gatekeepers. Heidi leaves us with the message that learning can and does happen outside of institutions, and that they’re excited for Gen-Z to destroy gender!
